Neighbourhoods
This year’s Camp in Helensburg will be organised in neighbourhoods. A ‘neighbourhood’ is a group of people who choose to camp together and may also organise to cook and clean together, hang out together and support each other at climate camp. Neighbourhoods are mini-communities for the duration of the camp.
They can be organised geographically, organisationally, based on interest, identity or need.
You and your friends can start one or you can join an existing Neighbourhood!
Register your Neighbourhood
Please let us know if you plan to organise a neighbourhood. Send us:
- a short description of your neighbourhood and what you hope your neighbourhood will offer to climate camp,
- who you wish to invite to your neighbourhood,
- whether you are happy for the details of your neighbourhood to go on the website, and
- the details of a contact person for your neighbourhood.

The Hunter neighbourhood plans to organise a central kitchen for communal meals and a kitchen space for independent meal-making, as well as shared open spaces (hopefully a marquee) for meetings, discussions, banner making and socialising. Car pooling, shared train journeys, local billeting and resource sharing (camping gear etc) will also be happening. Climate Action Groups (CAG)
This is a neighbourhood for people in locally-based, community Climate Action Groups. Please bring your own food, cooking equipment and camping gear. Together we can also coordinate transport to the camp and mini-CAG Summit on the Saturday of Climate Camp (9.30am-1pm), pitch our tents in roughly the same area, bring extra food to share if you would like, perhaps people can take on roles within the neighbourhood like first aid, and please have a think about anything else you would like to do to help make Climate Camp a more supportive, inclusive and fun environment for yourself and others. Contact Tom Halbert (ParraCAN, NSW CAG Movement Building Working Group) - 0412 098 031 or nswcagcontact@gmail.com.

Some more information about neighbourhoods
The neighbourhood or barrio system is based on a successful model developed by popular resistance movements in Latin America. The neighbourhoods model of organising has been part of popular resistance movements in Latin America. The neighbourhood model encourages people to take ownership and responsibility of their own space and how climate camp works. It also helps people to meet each other and develop relationships to work together in the future.
Neighbourhoods are encouraged to share transport to the camp, organise a kitchen for themselves and share cooking and cleaning. There will be NO central kitchen at the camp, but there will be some raw ingredients available as a backup for people who didn't join a neighbourhood prior to the camp.
The overall camp organising will provide water, toilets, waste disposal, some electricity, meeting spaces, kids' space, first aid and some entertainment space. If there is something else you think the camp would benefit from, you are encouraged to organise it within your neighbourhood and let us know.
What will your neighbourhood need to bring?
- cooking gear including stove, cooking utensils, pots and pans, matches, sharp knives and a bread board
- food for the three days
- tarps and ropes for making your neighbourhood waterproof
- Chairs, rugs, bean bags, and/or other random junk from the side of the road to create a unique and beautiful neighbourhood
- a first aid kit and fire extinguisher
- a big container of water if you're able to
- Fairylights, gas light or other small light
- Eski and ice for any luxury food items that might need to be kept cold
- Sign/banner/boundary with your neighbouhood’s name on it so people can find their home
